A fishing bobber is an item of fishing equipment. Usually attached to a fishing line, it can serve several purposes. It can suspend bait at a certain depth and it can carry hooked bait to be buoyant and hang above certain areas of water (like grass flats) or it can drift with the currant! The bobber serves as an indicator, when the bobber goes down that means you have a fish on – so reel!
Its honestly hard to say with any accuracy who first used a bobber for fishing who would think that a fish would take the bait?! But same goes for who would dare first try a pineapple! But from what we’ve heard and read the first “bobber” that people used were pieces of twig, bird feather quills or rolled leaves as bite indicators, many years before any documented evidence!
The method described, involved boring a hole through a cork so the line could be passed through and trapped with a quill.
Prior to about 1800, anglers made their own floats, a practice that many still carry on today. But as the fishing industry grows so do the companies that come up with genius bobbers – you can get a wide variety, plain to popping corks!
Its safe to say we’ve come a long way from twigs haha! Whatever your preference is we can all say we love fishing and we love bobbers!
